I think Stevie Wonder said it best - “Music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand.”
At a time where the world seems to be coming undone at the seams, music is still playing its part in unifying the masses, bringing joy during an uncomfortable time and providing comfort to those that are for the most part, housebound. It has been a saving grace for many, and especially for me. Growing up listening to the “the best of VH1 Divas” every Saturday morning, whilst my mother completed the household chores, instilled in me a love for music very early. I couldn’t sing, so the next best thing for me was to learn how to play the instruments - I took on piano, steel pans, drums, and guitar in my childhood and adolescent years. Although I did not pursue a career as a musician, my love for music lead me down a different path - Playlist curating and DJ’ing. When the world slowed down, I used the opportunity to curate playlists for friends (and myself), which I hope would bring some peace during a tumultuous time. I found it to be incredibly therapeutic; putting music together and seeing how one song transitions into the other - it’s almost like doing a puzzle.
My favourite musical moment this year was during a trip to Bournemouth, when two of my friends and I were on the beach, simply listening to chill beats collaborating with the sounds of the waves washing up on the shore. I don’t think it gets better than sun, sea and melodies. The beautiful thing about music is that it can be enjoyed anywhere and by anyone. You do not have to be a composer to appreciate an amazing musical piece and you don’t have to be a singer to appreciate a great falsetto. It is subjective and the beauty is, no one is wrong - what moves you, may not move someone else and that is okay. One day we may have a world that embraces diversity like music does!
I’ve put together a playlist of songs that I currently enjoy listening to and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Take care xx
